About the Texas knowledge exam

Who runs it, the pass mark, and why people call it a DMV test.

Short answer: In Texas, driver licenses are handled by the Department of Public Safety (DPS), not the DMV. You need at least 70 percent on the Class C knowledge exam. Many people still search for a “DMV permit test,” which is why we use that name too.

DPS or DMV?

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles deals mainly with vehicles, such as titles and registration. Driver licenses, permits and exams come from Texas DPS, so that is where to go for official answers.

What to expect

  • You must score 70 percent or better to pass.
  • A vision exam is also part of getting licensed.
  • Applicants under 25 must take a driver education course, and some courses let you finish the knowledge exam as part of the course instead of at a DPS office. Ask your provider.
  • If you do not pass on the first try, your application stays on hold for 90 days. After 90 days or three failed exams, you need a new application and fee.

How our practice exams compare

Our 20 mock exams have 30 original questions each, and you pass with 21 correct. They are practice, not a copy of the real exam: we do not claim the same questions, the same length or the same difficulty.

Checked against the Texas Driver Handbook (DL-7, revised January 2026). Laws change, so check Texas DPS for the current rules before you rely on a number. Sources: Texas Driver Handbook, Chapter 1, Texas DPS driver license.
